The Importance of Proper Lighting to Animation

Proper use of lighting is very important in animation. Since a lot of animation deals with putting together a scene from non-continuously shot clips or pictures, it is very important that the lighting remains consistent and does not change dramatically from frame to frame.

Lighting is also important because it sets the mood of the animation. For example, a bright sunny day in a meadow would typically be illuminated brightly and evenly, with little to no shadows. However, a dark scene in a cave would have very little light, often with the light sources clearly visible to the audience. Yet another example of a different use of lighting could be a scene set in a scary place, which would utilize flickering lighting to add to the overall scariness of the scene.

Yet another important use of lighting is how the animated characters are lit. When you use a bright light that illuminates most of the character with very little shadows, it adds to the effect of the scene being happy. However, when you use a light with heavy shadows that doesn't illuminate anything but the face, it can create a creepy and scary atmosphere. Yet another use of lighting on a character is to soften the lights and add a bit of glow to create a romantic or soothing scene.
